Litter Mat
When we own cats, we are always looking for ways to keep the area around the litter box clean, and one great way to do this is by using a litter mat. Basically, this is a mat that you put underneath your cat’s litter box that is larger than the box itself. When the cat steps out of the litter box with dirty feet, instead of stepping directly onto your floor and tracking the dirt through the rest of the house, it is stepping onto the mat, which will collect a lot of the dirt before your cat steps onto the floor. This is going to save you a lot of time and energy, because you won’t be so busy all the time cleaning messes that are around the litter box.
Litter Mats Are Inexpensive
It doesn’t cost much to get a decent litter mat, and you can get one anywhere you can buy a litter box. You should probably check out department stores before buying one at a pet store, because they will probably be cheaper in department stores. In any case, you can get one for less than $10 most of the time, and this is a small price to pay for something that is going to be such a big help to you and your cat.
How To Make One
If you are crafty at all, you can easily make your own litter mat and save a little bit of money. In fact, you can help the environment too, by using recycled items to make your mat. All you need is an old rubber mat of some sort, even a car floor mat will do, and a really sharp knife. This is not a project that small children should be doing without adult supervision, as there is cutting involved.
The mat should be larger than the litter box, or your litter mat is not going to work, and you will have wasted your time making it. Place the litter box on top of the mat, and cut around it so that there is a margin all the way around of about six inches, enough space for your cat to step in before hitting the floor. Use tailors chalk to mark the lines if you are using a dark colored mat. Using the knife, cut around the lines, and your mat is ready to use. It is best to use a mat that has ridges, so any litter that comes off your cat’s feet gets stuck here and doesn’t go on the floor.
Whether you buy one or make one yourself, having a good litter mat beneath your litter box is going to be extremely beneficial. When you use a litter mat, you will not only be keeping litter off the floor, but also keeping your floor clean of accidents if your cat happens to miss the box once in a while.
